It is the story of a young man, Mason Crewe, who upon graduation from college, where he had just discovered Annie Warner, the girl of his dreams, found himself abruptly commissioned as Second Lieutenant, and stationed at the 38th parallel, in the thick of battle in 1951 Korea.
After months of combat, Mason was seriously wounded, and discharged to return to his boyhood home. He confronts a world that has not changed, but he feels detached from everything and everyone who should give him comfortable familiarity.
Mason’s father, a recently retired pastor, and former combat veteran himself, attempts to guide his son through the maze of confusion and estrangement from his former identity, and back to the assurance of his forgiveness and approval in Christ.
Mason’s comical mother decides her son needs more than his parents words to bring him back to the present. She secretly arranges for Annie to visit. After an awkward beginning, Mason begins to recover what he thought he had lost.
Soldier Come Home brings a gently light-hearted touch to the solemn problem of reintegration after serving in combat—an issue not typically well-addressed during that era, and a difficult transition still. The message is that one’s identity in Christ can be the healing bridge between those disparate realities.
At Ragtown Gospel Theater, we consider the tickets for all veteran and active duty service personnel pre-paid by their service. We hope that the message of this play further honors their willingness to protect our freedoms…first among them, the freedom to worship our Lord and Savior.
